Band-Aids

When people are hurt physically, they often use a Band-Aid. According to www.vitalstatistics.info, more than 100 billion Band-Aids have been sold since 2001. Band-Aids in general do not cure our physical ailment, but they provide physiological comfort which is greatly coveted by people around the US. When people are hurt emotionally, they often use a Band-Aid. To cover up emotional pain, people will wear Band-Aids of self-pity, substance abuse, or physical abuse. And just like real Band-Aids, they only provide small comfort because they don't cure the ailment.

People who are hurting to what makes them feel better. We want instant relief. That is exactly why pain-killer medicine commercials always talk about how fast their product works to relieve headaches or muscle pain. Emotional Band-Aids do not cure whatever caused the pain; they only deepen the pain.

I believe the most common emotional Band-Aid is self-pity. When we hurt, we want to be comforted. That is human nature and honestly, there is nothing wrong with that. But when we take our want to be comforted to the extreme and starting pitying ourselves, we are sinning against God! In reality, when we throw a pity party for ourselves, we're telling God, "You aren't good enough to me."

What does the Bible say?

James 5:13a
"Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray."

Philippians 4:13
"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

Psalm 55:22
"Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved."

Lamentations 3:22-26
"It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD."
